As the Belk store at Friendly Center grew beyond its available square footage, the company looked to further expand by breaking off its specialty departments into nearby buildings. This project redeveloped existing commercial property in order to accommodate a 28,000 SF new-construction retail building for Belk with a focus on home goods. The new building is one story and consists of a precast skin with a structural steel shell. A stone trim, storefront display windows with hurricane-style shutters, and a black/blue/white color scheme consistent with the retailer’s branding accent the building.
To make room for the new building, a single-story brick bank and a three-story 70s-era office building were demolished. The entire project took eight months to complete, with new construction lasting approximately six months.
